This 7-days Tanzania Western Circuit Safari akes you to Mahale Mountains National Park which lies on the shores of Lake Tanganyika in western Tanzania. Named after the Mahale Mountains range that is within its borders, the park has several unusual characteristics. First, it is one of only two protected areas for chimpanzees in the country. Another unusual feature of the park is that, it is one of the very few parks in Africa that must be experienced by foot.
Your journey will continue to explore the smallest of Tanzania’s national parks. Gombe Stream National Park is a fragile strip of chimpanzee habitat that straddles the steep slopes and river valleys that hem the northern shores of Lake Tanganyika.
The dry season (May -October) is the best period to visit western Tanzania’s parks. During this period, chimpanzees are likely to be seen in big groups, the sunshine illuminates the fish in the Lake and the beach is an inviting place to relax. However, these Parks are accessible all year round. A visit in the rainy season can also be a memorable experience.
At 6:30 AM, you’ll be picked up from your hotel in Arusha and transferred to the airport for your scheduled flight to Mahale Mountains National Park. Upon arrival, you’ll be greeted and taken to your accommodation for lunch, followed by some time to relax and unwind.
Stretching from the shores of the stunning Lake Tanganyika, the mountainous terrain of Mahale Mountain National Park is home to some of Africa’s last surviving wild chimpanzees. Trekking in search of these charming primates is a highlight of the reserve. The hikes to the chimps’ habitats are relatively accessible and not overly strenuous, though being in good physical condition will make navigating the jungle easier. Observing these endangered primates is a truly unforgettable experience.
In addition to chimp trekking, visitors can enjoy various activities such as forest walks, birdwatching, boat trips, snorkeling, fishing, and kayaking.
Gombe Stream National Park, situated on the western border of Tanzania and the Congo, is one of the country’s smallest national parks, covering just 35 km² of protected land along the eastern shores of Lake Tanganyika. Established in 1968, it is renowned for offering a unique opportunity to observe chimpanzees in their natural habitat away from the crowds. Guided hikes lead visitors into the lush forests, providing a chance to encounter these fascinating primates in the wild.
